Communicating With Dementia/Alzheimer's Residents

Level: Advanced

This workshop is an exploration of the communication challenges faced by all caregivers involved in the care management of Alzheimer's/Dementia residents. Self-reflection exercises in Aging will be presented. Assuming prior knowledge in the area, communication guidelines including verbal and non-verbal strategies, will be discussed. Communication challenges and solutions in dealing with behaviors of Dementia/Alzheimer's residents will be explored. Knowing each resident as an individual is the foundation of resident-centered care management of Alzheimer's/Dementia residents. Small group discussions will be utilized for case studies in long term care where every attendee/participant will have input and provide solutions to communication challenges.
